Stratos refers to the stratosphere, which is the second major layer of Earth’s atmosphere, located above the troposphere and below the mesosphere. It extends from about 10 to 50 kilometers (approximately 6 to 31 miles) above sea level. The stratosphere is characterized by a temperature increase with altitude, primarily due to the absorption of ultraviolet (UV) radiation by the ozone layer, which is situated within this layer. This zone plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth by filtering harmful UV rays from the sun. The stratosphere also contains jet streams, which are fast-flowing air currents that have significant impacts on weather patterns. This layer is relatively stable compared to the turbulent troposphere below it and lacks the convection currents found in that layer, which contributes to clearer skies.
